1 Thessalonians 4
Key Text: 1 Thes 4:11-12 – “aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we directed you, so that you may behave properly toward outsiders and be dependent on no one.”
- gives the impression that we should be isolated
- the “proper” way to behave to outsiders is to not be “dependent” on them – this seems counter to Christian community. Is this really what this verse means?
- I don’t really like this verse.
- What if it means this, instead…
aspire to live a simple life, only worry about what you can have an effect on, do something constructive, as you’ve been taught, so that you won’t be a burden to anyone, but so that you can live in right relationship with everyone.
If it means that, I’m all for it.
