“but by refusing to be baptized by him, the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves.”
We usually think of the Pharisees as being completely against Jesus but we forget that God had a plan for them too. God has a plan for everyone, but we have the choice to accept or reject it. A lot of peole make a big deal about Jesus coming to the poor and the oppressed, but here we find that he also came for those who rejected him. Sometimes in the Bible and in life it seems like the poor are more likely to accept Jesus, while the establishment is less likely, even though God still has a plan for them. Just look at where Christianity is growing the most rapidly today.
