The parable of the barren fig tree is a bit of a weird one. My initial thought is that its about patience I wonder too if it might be about leadership. The man looks for three years for fruit and there isn’t any, so he wants to give up on the plant. The gardener however wants one more year to try and tend it. We aren’t told if he gets the year. Maybe this is as simple as, put in your time tending people. Often in ministry, we are the man who owns the vineyard – we want to give up on people and activities that aren’t producing fruit. Instead, we need to be the gardener – when others want to give up, we need to ask for one more year to work.
Luke 13:8 – “Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around i and put manure on it.”
